Photographer Don Murray fell in love with Southern California 25 years ago and never really left. Now, from his home in Laguna Beach, he chases the light the rest of us simply walk past.
Photographer Don Murray fell in love with Southern California 25 years ago and moved to the area shortly thereafter. No wonder. It's a photographer's paradise. From dramatic cliffs to secluded coves and nonstop ocean sunsets, Laguna gave Murray plenty of material.
Four years ago, after spending as much time as possible in our enclave, he finally made Laguna Beach his home.
A Lifelong Eye
Murray picked up his first camera at age six. Fascinated by his father's Brownie Hawkeye — an instamatic point-and-shoot camera popular in the '60s — he took on chores to finance his hobby. By 17, Murray was working as an apprentice photojournalist with a rural, mid-western newspaper. He studied photography at Ohio State University, but majoring in business proved the more practical plan. Still, his camera never left his side.
Seeking out silhouettes, reflections, unique cloud formations and — of course — sunsets, Murray recently traveled to Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, and Portugal. Despite all those amazing destinations, he feels lucky to call Laguna home.
Murray frequently shares his stunning captures on social media. His Instagram account has more than 19,000 followers who appreciate his unique eye and oceanfront access.
Sunsets bring tranquility to the soul, while simultaneously invigorating the spirit. They're filled with magical moments that let us experience the world as we once did as children — a world that's filled with wonders and adventures.
In His Own Words
What do you love about Laguna?
Laguna is the quintessential Southern California beach town. We have the luxurious opportunity to experience the ocean every day. Where else can one find such extraordinary ocean vistas, with so many coves and beaches to enjoy, as well as miles of lush greenbelt to explore.
What are a few of your favorite local spots?
Shaw's Cove and Crescent Bay are my favorite beaches, while Heisler Park is my favorite place for a leisurely stroll. My favorite getaway is to hike up the Dartmoor Trail into the greenbelt.
What's something every local should experience?
A sunrise stroll along the beach. In the morning, it's mostly locals. Some are walking their dogs, some are enjoying their first cup of coffee, and nearly everyone is smiling and greeting those they meet along the way with a friendly "hello" and "good morning."
What suggestions do you offer people who want to take better pictures?
When you take a photo, seek to capture an image that makes you feel alive. It's your emotional connection to an image, and your ability to capture that emotion, that will let others share what you were experiencing when you took the picture.
